Hello Everyone,

I've not been on here for a very long time, shame really as I have been looking at some of the messages and they have helped me so much that I don't want to be a stranger on here again!!

My question is - which has mostly been answered by others in a simular question.....is regarding MTX and getting pregnant.

I'm 32, almost 33 and want to start trying for a baby, as of now really! I have had RA for almost 10 years and Lupus for 3. Currently I am very well and only had a brief flareup a few days ago. I was on 20mg MTX which I stopped taking on 1st Dec 2010, (my consultant is aware that I am trying,) I also came off the pill at the beginning of March. (I've not yet had a period) to give my body a rest.
My partner and I have problems trying to use condoms and we are currently trying to decide what other type to use - apart from no sex of cause!!! which defets the object!!
As of the 1st April MTX would have been out of my system for four months and I was wondering, if we had an accident, if I should become pregnant (wishful thinking I know!) would it harm the unborn baby?? Does MTX have to be out of the system for a number of months, like 3, 4 or 6mths before you start trying.
I am currently only taking a lose dose of pred, (5mg) hydrox, and a pain killer and anti-flam, all of which are ok to take whist pregnant.

Hope someone can help and puy my mind at risk,
Regards,
Claire x

Hi Claire

Welcome to the forum.

I may be wrong, but I think methotrexate needs about 6 months to be fully out of your system before trying to conceive. I stopped it last year due to neutropenia and was still feeling its declining benefits 4 months later so it is quite slow to shift. It can be toxic to the embryo and can cause fetal defects and miscarriage so something you need to be clear on.

Could you perhaps call your rheumatology nurse, if you have one, for advice? Or perhaps drop your Rheumatologist a letter so that you are clear on what is okay. 20mg of MTX is quite a high dose so not sure whether that affects anything. Better to be safe than sorry.

Good luck!

My son, Ian, completed the BUPA Great North Run on 15th September running for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS). You can read his story at http://www.justgiving.com/ianlukewilson

Hi and welcome Claire,
i agree with Lyn, best to clarify things with your rheumatologist first. Also, some consultant's recommend you do not use anti-inflams whilst ttc/preg as studies have shown that they can cause miscarriages. Perhaps you could check this out too with your consultant just to be safe.

Good luck and best wishesXXX.

I know this was written ages ago but I just have to say NO it doesn't!!!

MTX needs 3mths to be out of the system but the Docs cover themselves by saying 6mths.

When we decided to have a new baby my Rheumy (who is a Prof and a great man!) told me it isn't because of getting it out of your system it is because of the possibility of damaged eggs. So the 3mths are just an amount of time to make absolute sure the eggs you produce are not tampered or affected by the MTX.

I ceased taking MTX in December 2010 and was expecting by February 2011 which culminated in the precious GRACE!

I am very happy and willing to chat to anyone wanting to TTC - i have had all of my babies with RA.

Love,

Amanda

Sometimes if you have had leflunomide as well as mtx you have to be 2 yrs clear. I didn't do this and had a wash out treatment.

As Amanda says in the end these babies are so worth it!
